Profiles Spring 2009

Jamie Mitchell is joining us from Second Baptist Church where she serves as leader on her church’s Glocal and Evangelism Team. She joins us for Unity Works because she says, “I want to better understand how to serve the poor and homeless and I want to find ways to serve outside my church. As leader of my church Glocal and Evangelism team, I feel a call to disciple people into missions, and this class is a way to prepare and equip to lead them out.”

Roxann Regan is a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church and serves with the Children’s Ministry. Roxann says she joined Unity Works because, “My heart longs to help others; especially single moms and children.”

Michelle Dean is also a member of Second Baptist. She comes to us because she simply “wants to reach out to others.”

Lisa Dewitt joins us from Second Baptist Church, where she serves as a Sunday School teacher. She has always felt called to help the homeless and is now in a place of wanting to learn more. As she has felt God’s call in this area, she is following the direction of that call by participating in Unity Works.

Dean Miller is a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and works on the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. He joins us with a hope of being able to understand homelessness in Richmond and being able to take that information to churches across the state in hopes that they will become interested in assisting and learning avenues to break the cycles of poverty.

Lori Plumley joins us from Three Chopt Presbyterian Church where serves as a Deacon. She said she wanted to participate in Unity Works because she “has lived in Richmond for 30 years and feels called to the need to help in the inner city.” She “hopes to truly understand the struggles of homelessness and be further inspired to help “make a difference” and share this with my congregation.”

Carolyn Longmire is a member of 2nd Baptist and helps to facilitate bible study with the Church Hill community where they partner with the RBA Center there. When asked why she wanted to participate in Unity Works she said, “ Because I believe God is calling me to get deeper involved in local community.”

Sandra White joins us from 2nd Baptist where she is active in Bible Study and The Prayer Shawl Ministry. She wanted to participate in Unity Works “to share her time and love with people who need love and understanding and help.”

Ann Pryor is a member of Second Baptist Church and participates in many volunteer activities from the American Cancer Society to the Richmond Leadership Council. She wants to participate in Unity Works because she is co-chair of a homeless project that her church and First Baptist are embarking on at Boulevard Baptist Church.” She wants to understand as much as possible in order to help most efficiently.

Kathy Spotts is also a member of Second Baptist. She works with World Missions Unlimited and Addiction Recovery as well as the Prison Ministry. She wants to support the First and Second Boulevard Project.

Bentley Heese is a Deacon at Second Baptist who participates in other ministries as well, such as World Missions Unlimited, Men’s Missions and he was the Co-Developer of Glocal. When asked why he wanted to participate in Unity Works he said, “ to be better prepared as we go forth with First Baptist at Boulevard Baptist. I hope to accomplish whatever God has in His plans for me.”

Tom Mitchell is a member of 2nd Baptist Church. He teaches Sunday School and is a Bible Study Leader as well. He participates in community groups, such as Machipongo and coaches Basketball. Tom wants to be responsive to God’s call to the church…to move from comfort to need, to care for the widow and the orphan, to love righteousness and to do justice. He says, “ I want to glorify God by offering myself as a living sacrifice.”

Linda Geho is a Deacon at Second Baptist and also serves as the Fourth Grade Sunday School teacher. When asked why she wants to participate in Unity Works, she responded, “ To gain a greater understanding of the existing umbrella of organizations established to aid this population and to learn of efficient and effective ways to help…while using my faith as a medium.”

Beverly Kee is a member of Second Baptist Church. She serves with the WMU, Clothes Closet and is a Deacon as well. She wants to learn how to best help the homeless in the Boulevard project proposed by our church in partnership with First Baptist.

Jane Vaughn is a member of Second Baptist and is passionate about missions. She is a Sunday School teacher and serves with the WMU. She joined because she simply wanted “additional knowledge” about the homeless population.

Susan Hicklin is a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. She works with the Sunday School ministry and is looking to develop her faith through serving God.
